Oregon’s medical assistants are sitting pretty, thanks to strong salaries and exceptional job growth projections.

The Oregon Employment Department reported one of the fastest job growth rates in the nation in the medical assisting field – a better-than 5% increase is expected in the two-year period from 2019 to 2021 just to keep up with demand.

Salaries here are also impressive. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2019 medical assistants in Oregon earned an average hourly wage of $19.02, or $39,570 annually. Those armed with experience and the CMA designation earn upwards of $24.52 an hour, or $51,010 a year – an increase of more than $10,000 annually.

Average Hourly Wages for Medical Assistants in Oregon’s Metro Areas

The BLS reported the following average hourly wages (median – top 10%) for medical assistants in Oregon’s largest metro areas:

  • Albany: $16.43 – $22.12 (approximately 270 medical assistants)
  • Bend-Redmond: $18.25 – $24.00 (approximately 650 medical assistants)
  • Corvallis: $19.60 – $24.78 (approximately 300 medical assistants)
  • Eugene: $19.47 – $24.90 (approximately 1,120 medical assistants)
  • Grants Pass: $17.56 – $23.22 (approximately 250 medical assistants)
  • Medford: $18.71 – $24.74 (approximately 820 medical assistants)
  • Portland (greater metro area includes Vancouver and Hillsboro, OR-WA): $20.20 – $24.96 (approximately 7,540 medical assistants)
  • Salem: $18.49 – $24.19 (approximately 1,520 medical assistants)
